“With the focus on progress, the arrival of Tremayne Smith along with two other key managers is set to accelerate our wines towards achieving global icon status.”
Fable Mountain Vineyards is proud to announce the appointment of its new Winemaker, Tremayne Smith. Widely recognised as one of South Africa’s most exciting young winemaking talents, Tremayne is set to accelerate Fable Mountain Vineyards’ progress towards becoming an internationally recognised producer of iconic wines.
Tremayne’s arrival coincides with the appointment of two other key staff: Andrea Erwee, Sales and Marketing Manager; and Werner Wessels, Farm Manager.
Located near Tulbagh in South Africa’s Cape Winelands region, Fable Mountain Vineyards is part of the Terroir Family founded by internationally respected US-based investor Charles Banks. Its wines − including Mayacamas, Mulderbosch, Trinity Hill, Qupé and Wind Gap among others − continue to attract positive reviews from critics and consumers worldwide.
Charles’s vision for Fable Mountain Vineyards is clear – and Tremayne is set to play an instrumental role in making it a reality. “I want to see our name established among the world’s iconic estates,” he comments. “Tremayne’s talent for pushing the boundaries and creating cutting-edge wines has already won recognition and fits perfectly with our ambitions. His arrival, combined with the appointment of Andrea and Werner, is a vital step towards realising my vision while achieving the long-term sustainable growth of our business.”
Tremayne Smith, Winemaker
Inspired by his father’s love for fine wine and food, Tremayne Smith decided to follow a career in winemaking after spending a year at culinary school. After graduating from Elsenberg College with a degree in Cellar Technology in 2007, he spent a harvest at De Trafford in 2008 before moving to Sijn Wines as Assistant Winemaker and Vineyard Manager, working closely under celebrated wine maker, David Trafford.
In 2012, Tremayne moved to Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines as Assistant Winemaker, gaining invaluable experience and winning recognition as a game-changing Young Gun from Wine Cellar, the respected online wine merchant.
Born and raised in East London in the Eastern Cape, Tremayne has also completed two vintages in the South of France and a vintage in Central Spain. In his free time, he enjoys curing and smoking meats, cooking and playing cricket.
Andrea Erwee, Sales and Marketing Manager
As a longstanding member of the Terroir Life team, Andrea Erwee is responsible for highlighting the unique qualities that make Fable Mountain Vineyards such an exciting name among wine lovers in the US and, increasingly, Europe.
With a degree in Business and Communication from Antioch University, California, Andrea currently plans and manages the execution of initiatives such as hospitality events, visitor programmes and trade events to promote and reinforce our brand image. In addition, she plays a key role in ensuring we meet the objectives laid down in our sustainable growth strategy. She is also responsible for recruiting team members with the skills and experience to market the Fable Mountain Vineyards portfolio with maximum impact.
Commenting on what inspires her most, Andrea says: “I had been fortunate enough to drink great wines from all over the world with Charles Banks and his wife, Ali. I realised that South Africa also has the potential to produce equally exceptional wines.”
“Looking ahead, I have every confidence that a rising star like Tremayne will grab the attention of wine lovers throughout South Africa and beyond. Working with his team and representing somewhere as special as Fable Mountain Vineyards was a no-brainer.”
Werner Wessels – Farm Manager
Born and raised in the Cape Winelands, Wener Wessels brings a wealth of expertise and hands-on experience to his job as Fable Mountain Vineyards’ Farm Manager – and he loves every minute of his job.
Werner mastered his role from the bottom up, having started his career in cellar maintenance before becoming Farm Manager at nearby Fraaigelegen Farm, with specific responsibility for running the vineyard.
With a proven talent for leading and motivating his team, Werner is now applying his skills to further enhancing Fable Mountain Vineyards’ rising reputation. “I really enjoy working outdoors,” he comments. “There is nothing more fulfilling than watching small beginnings grow into a flourishing and productive asset. At Fable Mountain Vineyards, it is easy to see how much Mother Nature gives back when she is treated with love and respect.”
Out of hours, Werner indulges his passion for building classic hot rods and muscle cars or jumps on a mountain bike whenever he needs to refresh his mind and recharge his batteries
